Clinical Ladder Minimum Eligibility Criteria

Clinical Nurse III

  • Greater than 2 year of practice 
  • BSN
  • National Certification
  • No written disciplinary actions within the last 12 months
  • 0.5 FTE or greater

Clinical Nurse IV

  • Greater than 2 year of practice
  • MSN. For current BSN CNIV’s: Enroll by the end of July 2020. Graduate by July 2023  
  • National Certification
  • No written disciplinary actions within the last 12 months
  • 0.5 FTE or greater
  • Must complete a minimum of 1 year at a CN III level before applying for advancement to a CN IV level.

Clinical Nurse III

  • The proficient nurse who has an in-depth knowledge of nursing practice and perceives each situation as a whole to comprehend the significant aspects of situation based on experience.
  • The proficient nurse demonstrates the ability to recognize situational changes that require unplanned or unanticipated interventions.
  • The proficient nurse responds to situations with confidence, speed, and flexibility.
  • The proficient nurse has a holistic view of patient care.
  • The proficient nurse demonstrates effective relationships with other caregivers and provides leadership to the health care team in formulating integrated approaches to care.
  • The proficient nurse interprets patients’ and family’s experiences from a wider perspective and can envision other possibilities.


Clinical Nurse IV

  • The expert nurse is an expert practitioner whose clinical forethought (intuition) and skill arise from comprehensive knowledge thoroughly grounded in experience.
  • The expert nurse practice is characterized by a flexible, innovative, and confident self-directed approach to patient and family care.
  • The expert nurse identifies situations, formulates solutions, initiates change, and monitors outcomes.
  • The expert nurse operates from a deep understanding of the total situation. They are able to articulate their practice comfortably and proficiently.
  • They are involved in activities at the organizational level and understand how their unit aligns with the strategic goals of the organization.
  • The expert nurse collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to challenge and coordinate resources in order to maximize advocacy for patient and family care and in achieving the most effective outcomes.
  • The expert nurse serves as a role-model and readily shares knowledge.
